Every yogi was a beginner at some point. We know that starting your yoga journey can feel daunting and stressful. Don’t worry; we’re here to answer your questions and help you with the yoga basics!
WHICH STYLE OF YOGA SHOULD I START WITH?
When searching for beginner yoga classes, you’ve likely encountered different class types with unfamiliar-sounding names. You may be wondering whether to start with a hatha, vinyasa, or yin class.
Each yoga style encompasses a unique set of movements intended to achieve different goals. A new yogi seeking meditative relief may choose hatha, while someone aiming to increase their flexibility would benefit from yin, and a yogi looking to seriously sweat would be at home in a vinyasa class.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY FIRST YOGA CLASS?
You don’t have to wear tight and colorful outfits like the yoga models do. Just wear clothes that are comfortable and not too loose, and you’ll be good to go!
A good yoga mat is paramount to your balance and stability. You may be tempted to shell out for a high-quality mat right away, but it’s perfectly fine to start out with an inexpensive one before buying your perfect long-term mat.
Many yogis utilize props as well, including blocks, straps, and bolsters. Feel free to ask your instructor how to use these props and if they might benefit your practice.
WHAT IF I FEEL OUT OF PLACE IN A YOGA CLASS?
It’s easy to be intimidated by the perfectly chiseled yogis you see flowing effortlessly through complicated poses, but there’s no need to feel insecure. Each of those yogis was a beginner at one point, and besides, if you look around you, there are plenty more folks who don’t look like that. Yoga is for everybody, and yogis can be any shape, size, or ability level.
WHAT DO ALL THE POSE NAMES MEAN?
There are dozens of different poses, so don’t sweat learning the names when you’re getting started. You’ll learn them with practice, and Flowell’s instructors will descriptively cue poses and modifications.
ARE VIRTUAL CLASSES GOOD FOR YOGA BEGINNERS?
While both in-studio and virtual yoga classes are great for beginners, online classes may be more convenient for novice yogis. Flowell’s platform has all the tools you need to learn yoga basics and start your yoga practice with confidence.
Online classes allow you to practice in a familiar setting.
